Board Appoints Two to Prop 10 Commission
Santa Ana, Calif. (August 3, 1999) - The Board of Supervisors this morning appointed Dr. Alberto Gedissman and Dr. Peter Hartman as at large members to the Orange County Children and Families First Commission. The appointments and term lengths comply with requirements set out in Proposition 10, the voter-approved Tobacco Tax Initiative and concludes the appointment process bringing the Commission to its full compliment of nine members.
Supervisor Cynthia Coad appointed Alberto Gedissman, M.D., a pediatrician. Gedissman served as past president of the California Chapter for the American Academy of Pediatrics. Presently, Gedissman is chair of a youth violence committee and is involved with drug abuse and prevention campaigns. He is a Clinical Professor for the University of California, Irvine College of Medicine. Gedissman has served as chairman for a number of organizations including: the Dept. of Pediatrics for Western Medical Center, Maternal and Perinatal Health for the Orange County Medical Association, and the International Health Committee for the American Academy of Pediatrics. He has also been member of the Ethics Committee for the Orange County Medical Association.
Peter Hartman, Ph.D., Superintendent in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District, was appointed to the commission by Supervisor Tom Wilson. Hartman presently serves as instructor of school finance, personnel, leadership of instruction, and school governance at the California State University, Fullerton. Hartman is a Corporate Member of Blue Shield of California and serves as both Trustee and Finance Committee Member for the St. Joseph Health System. Hartman presently belongs to a number of associations including: the American Association of School Administrators, Suburban School Superintendents, National School Boards Association, and the California City School Superintendents.
These appointees join three mandatory and four at-large members of the Commission: Board Chairman Chuck Smith, Social Services Agency Director Larry Leaman, Health Care Agency Interim Director Julie Poulson, Attorney and child advocate Hugh Hewitt, Children's Hospital CEO Kimberly Cripe, pediatrician Maria Minon and school trustee Crystal Kochendorfer.
The Commission is expected to convene for its first meeting in early to mid September.
