Coad, Correa Provide Information to Potential LIFE Applicants
(Santa Ana) – As a result of last year’s passage of the Legal Immigration and Family Equity Act (LIFE) by Congress, limited immigration reform was enacted, and foreign-born residents began looking for answers.
Community groups soon began reporting to their elected officials stories of potential LIFE applicants being misled and overcharged. To counter the pervasive mis-information, Chair Cynthia P. Coad, Orange County Board of Supervisors and California Assemblyman Lou Correa, 69th Assembly District, will hold a press conference at 1 p.m. tomorrow to provide information regarding reputable community resources.
"One of the responsibilities of government is to protect people from harm. The harm in this case is misinformation,” said Coad. “People living in our community are being misled on the process of adjusting their status to legal resident under the LIFE Act. It is our duty as citizens and representatives of Orange County to provide leadership to those being victimized."
"As the chair of the Assembly Business and Professions Committee which oversees consumer protection issues for California, I am concerned that our constituents are being taken advantage of by unscrupulous individuals who see a change in the law as an opportunity to make money,” said Correa. “I hope our efforts over the next two months can help people find competent, knowledgeable and affordable services."
