(Santa Ana, CA) - The Board of Supervisors on September 18th made no decision to pursue litigation for the 3% at 50 retirement issue. During Closed Session the Board voted unanimously to retain the services of Kirkland & Ellis LLP to examine the issue, report back to them in sixty to ninety days and represent the County in litigation if the Board should decide at a future date to pursue litigation.
“It is extremely important for the public to understand that we are gathering comprehensive legal information on a very complex issue,” said Board Chairman Chris Norby. “The Board will receive and consider public comments during a future Board meeting before we make any decision as to whether or not to pursue legal action.”
The Board made the decision to seek the counsel of Kirkland & Ellis LLP only after it had taken time to interview and carefully evaluate six leading law firms.
Kirkland & Ellis LLP is recognized as one of the top law firms and consistently receives accolades from various publications, organizations and clients. In November 2006, it was named “USA Law Firm of the Year” by Chambers & Partners, a highly respected international legal publisher and rating firm. The lead Kirkland & Ellis attorney for the County is Robert R. Gasaway, a partner and specialist in constitutional, administrative and appellate litigation.
