Orange County’s Chief Engineer Receives ASCE Award
(Santa Ana, CA) - Ken Smith, Director Public Works/Chief Engineer for the County of Orange – Resources and Development Management Department, was honored with the Engineer of the Year Award on February 19 from the Orange County Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). ASCE is a professional association with more than 130,000 members worldwide.
Smith was recognized for his more than 37 years of dedicated public service and for his many accomplishments including numerous large scale infrastructure projects throughout Orange County. He was also honored for his leadership on award winning construction projects including Antonio Parkway and State Route 71. In addition, he recently led a major restructuring of the County’s public works function and is implementing a reorganization of the department’s project management system.
During his 37 years with the County of Orange, Smith has served as Chief Engineer for the Integrated Waste Management Department and Director of Transportation for the former Environmental Management Agency. He recently announced his retirement which will be in late March 2004.
