Supervisor Janet Nguyen Holds Successful Contract Procurement Conference Small businesses introduced to county contracting

(Santa Ana) Supervisor Janet Nguyen successfully held her first annual Procurement Conference attended by over 120 small businesses. Conference attendees learned how to bid on County of Orange and Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) projects.

.The half-day conference, held at the Delhi Center in Santa Ana on March 20, was highlighted with an introduction by Supervisor Janet Nguyen, First District, J. Adalberto Quijada, District Director of the U.S. Small Business Administration, and Priscilla Lopez, President and CEO of the Orange County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Small business owners were introduced to the key contacts of many of the departments of the County of Orange and the OCTA.

Following the introductions by the aforementioned luminaries, a panel discussion was held on “How to do business with the county.” The panel featured speakers from the OCTA, the Municipal Water District, the Orange County Small Business Development Center, and Office Depot. These speakers discussed their own contracting process, and Office Depot spoke on their experience in obtaining county contracts to supply the County of Orange with office goods.

There are many types of contracts available at the County of Orange, including commodities, service contracts, public works, and human services. For these types of contracts, a small business is available to make an informal bid, a formal bid such as an invitation for bid or request for proposal, or online bidding. To register as a county vendor, register online at www.ocgov.com. Click on “Doing Business” and then “Vendor Registration.” It’s as easy as that! Within twenty four hours after registration, a business will start to receive notices about projects that can be bid on.

The conference allowed eager small business owners to privately meet with purchasing agents and learn about how to do business with the county. An open session encouraged attendees to speak with the county procurement officers to share their goods and introduce their business to the county. Supervisor Nguyen commented that “small business is the backbone of our economy. I want to ensure that they have the same opportunities to grow as large companies in our county.”


Supervisor Janet Nguyen represents the First District on the Orange County Board of Supervisors and Chair of the Transit Committee for the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA). She represents over 600,000 people, covering the Cities of Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Westminster, and Midway City. Orange County ranks sixth most populous county in the nation and the second most populous county in the State of California. Orange County has the seventh highest county budget in the nation with a budget of over $6 billion and over 18,000 employees.
