Bishop Manor KaBOOM Playground Project Completed

(Santa Ana) Supervisor Janet Nguyen, Chair of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, joined other community and business leaders in the opening of the new KaBOOM playground at the Bishop Manor neighborhood.

More than 200 volunteers from the area, including residents, community and business leaders, came together on Thursday, March 11 and Saturday, March 13, 2010, to bring this important project to completion.

“It was an honor for me to be a part of this project,” said Supervisor Janet Nguyen. “The residents of this community now have a central gathering place where parents and children can come and enjoy each other’s company. This project continues to show the good that can come when communities communicate their needs and work together to affect positive change.”

After several months of interviews, the Bishop Manor Homeowner’s Association, in partnership with America On-Track, was chosen to be a part of the KaBOOM playground project. Over the past 12 years, project KaBOOM has built more than 1,300 playgrounds in communities like Bishop Manor across the United States.

Less than two years ago, a 10-month investigation into alleged gang activity in the Bishop Manor apartment complex in the city's southeast side ended with a raid by Santa Ana police and federal authorities on about a dozen units. To help Bishop Manor rebuild, an Inter-agency Task Force was formed. The Task Force created the foundation for a renewed neighborhood focused on reestablishing stability through community building, property management and addressing public safety issues.

The playground symbolizes the improvements at Bishop Manor and serves as a ray of hope for continued progress.
