Supervisor Janet Nguyen Hosts Central Orange County Health Expo in Garden Grove

Coordinated by the Illumination Foundation, this free event provided health screenings, information and dental and vision services to more than 1,000 individuals.

(Santa Ana) Supervisor Janet Nguyen, Chair of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, hosted the first Central County Health Expo on Saturday, May 8, 2010, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Coastline Community College in Garden Grove, where more than 1,000 individuals took advantage of the free services being offered.

The event featured free medical care, vision exams and a limited number of eye glasses were provided to those in need. All 500 pairs of eye glasses were distributed before noon. Attendees also were able to have blood pressure screenings, cholesterol testing, diabetes and stroke screenings as well. Several County agencies including the Orange County Office on Aging and the Social Services Agency were present to answer questions and distribute information. CalOptima was also available to provide information on the recent health reform legislation.

“Central Orange County and the First District, in particular, have a high rate of uninsured or under-insured residents,” said Supervisor Janet Nguyen, Chair of the Board of Supervisors. “I think the large turnout at this Health Expo demonstrates the tremendous need in Orange County for these basic services.”

A few of the participating agencies and organizations included the Illumination Foundation, Southern California Edison, the Garden Grove Downtown Business Association, OC Health Care Agency, CalOptima, the Orange County Medical Association, Kaiser Permanente, Abrazar, Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center, OC Office on Aging, CHOC, Lestonnac Free Clinic the American Diabetes Association, UCI Medical Center, St. Jude Medical Center, OC Social Services Agency, OC Medical Association and Starbright.

“It is such a pleasure to be working with so many wonderful organizations that so clearly see the need to help those in our community who need these basic services. The underserved can often be overlooked and I want to thank these partners for their tremendous support of this event,” said Andrew Do, Garden Grove Councilmember.
