Supervisor Janet Nguyen and OC Parks Celebrate Groundbreaking at Roger Stanton Park in Midway City
(Santa Ana) First District Supervisor Janet Nguyen and the Orange County Department of OC Parks broke ground on October 16th, 2008 to begin renovation to the soon to be improved Roger Stanton Park in Midway City. This occasion also marks the transferring of support and landscape maintenance of the Park to the Department of OC Parks. Previously on Sept. 16th, the Board of Supervisors has approved this transfer, and due to the diligent work by County staff, the project has started ahead of schedule.
Roger Stanton Park surrounds a community center built on a 1.5 acre parcel of land in unincorporated Midway City. Built in 1985, the community center is just north of Bolsa Ave. and just east of Newland Street. Though commonly referred to as Roger Stanton Park, the land was never under the care of any county parks department.
Community Development Block Grant funding has been on the decline, and with limited funds, Roger Stanton Park has fallen into disrepair. Tree roots are overgrown causing sidewalk damage; under-irrigated landscape is now hard dirt; and vandalism to benches has gone unrepaired. Recognizing this problem, Supervisor Janet Nguyen and her staff worked with County staff to restore this open space for better public use.
Supervisor Janet Nguyen has pledged to support more open park space for the First District. Currently, the First District does not have any county parks. This long overdue effort is a first step to ensuring the first district receives its fair share of open park space in Orange County.
“It’s important to repair and maintain these open spaces in our communities and I’m happy to see that the work has begun ahead of schedule,” said First District Supervisor Janet Nguyen. “I hope the new and improved Roger Stanton Park will be enjoyed by many families in the years to come.”
