Supervisor Moorlach Honoring Medal of Honor recipient Walter Ehlers
With a mixture of military pomp, personal pride and a hint of humor, more than 750 people – including seven Medal of Honor recipients – bid good-bye to an American hero Saturday in unseasonably warm weather at Riverside National Cemetery.
Buena Park resident Walter Ehlers died Feb. 19 at age 92. Ehlers had been the last survivor among nine recipients of the Medal of Honor, the nation's most revered military honor, who braved withering fire on the beaches of Normandy, France, on D-Day, June 6, 1944.
The service, less than three months before the invasion's 70th anniversary, was held in front of the cemetery's Medal of Honor Memorial, which Ehlers helped to establish.
