Jerry Daleiden has served as a Ranger Reserve and volunteered in the County’s historic parks for more than 16 years. In addition to walking tours and special events scheduled at Heritage Hill Historical Park, he assists with various assignments at George Key Ranch Historical Park, Helena Modjeska Historic House and Gardens and other parks as needed.
Jerry can be counted on to lead the 2 p.m. interpretive tours at Heritage Hill Historical Park three Thursdays each month. When he completes each tour he performs safety inspections of the park’s wheel chair lifts and checks and replaces (when accessible) light bulbs in all five historic buildings. In addition, Jerry is actively involved in every major special event scheduled at Heritage Hill Historical Park.
NEED: What community need does the volunteer address?
Jerry has been an integral part of the team in assisting Park Rangers meet OC Parks’ goals of enhancing public communications, increasing educational opportunities and preserving and protecting historic resources. His extensive knowledge of local history and enthusiasm in sharing that wisdom with others guarantees that park visitors will be offered a very positive and informative experience.
IMPACT: What is different as a result of the volunteer's service?
Jerry has dedicated years to his research of local history and is a valuable resource for Heritage Hill Historical Park staff. His involvement helps to increase the number of residents served, and his historical insight adds to the meaningfulness of each interpretive tour.
INSPIRATION: What makes the volunteer unique/special?
Jerry, who retired from successful careers in the military and as a professional engineer, currently volunteers his time, talents and expertise with OC Parks. His dedication and commitment through bad weather, ill health and long hours is truly admirable. Jerry’s passion for history combined with a wonderful sense of humor captures the attention of hundreds of park visitors each year who are offered a unique look into Orange County’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
