ACTION: What does the volunteer do?
Patricia McFall is the founder and current president of the Friends of the Library for the Laguna Hills Technology Library. She launched the formation of the branch’s Friends group in July 2011, and since that time, she has dedicated more than 200 volunteer hours in researching, initiating, and establishing the organization.
With an eye for detail, Patricia completed the complex paperwork required by the State of California to establish the Friends’ tax-exempt status. In addition, she recruited and trained potential members who now volunteer their time in support of the library branch. Under Patricia’s leadership, the Laguna Hills Technology Library has secured the involvement of an effective Friends group that is successfully partnering with staff in serving the community.
NEED: What community need does the volunteer address?
The Laguna Hills Technology Library opened in July 2002 and is located inside the Laguna Hills Community Center. The branch provides the community with access to current technology and encourages the public to advance their computer skills through training opportunities.
Throughout OC Public Libraries, the Friends of the Library volunteers support their branches by promoting library services; raising awareness of the importance of libraries within the community; enriching resources; and generating funds that provide programming, equipment, and materials. When Patricia realized that the Laguna Hills Technology Library was missing the important alliance achieved through a Friends group, she quickly took action by securing the Friends’ nonprofit 501(c)(3) status, recruiting members to strengthen the organization, and assuming a leadership role for the emerging membership.
IMPACT: What is different as a result of the volunteer's service?
With the establishment of its Friends of the Library group, the Laguna Hills Technology Library can expand programming and services for the public. The library’s goal is to raise its profile within the community so that it becomes a key destination for children, teens, adults, families, retirees, and students who are interested in the varied and exciting technology resources that are offered at the branch throughout the year.
As a result of the Friends’ participation, library employees anticipate the scheduling of additional computer gaming events, digital photography classes, and computer training opportunities. In addition, the Friends will be regular contributors to the city of Laguna Hills Community Center’s quarterly “City Views” publication, which will heighten awareness throughout the city of the resources and services available at the Laguna Hills Technology Library.
INSPIRATION: What makes the volunteer unique/special?
Patricia is an accomplished individual. She is a teacher, writer, and editor who finds time in her busy schedule to provide exceptional leadership and ongoing support for the Friends of the Library. She was a featured author presenter at OC Public Libraries’ first Literary Orange event, and because of her literary background, she has a unique perspective regarding the significance of local libraries. Patricia is committed to the OC Public Libraries’ vision of “Open doors, Free Access, Community,” and her alignment with that vision is consistently communicated through her selfless dedication as a library volunteer and her tireless endeavors to establish and promote the Friends of the Laguna Hills Technology Library.
Thank you and congratulations to Patricia McFall, recipient of the 2013 Excellence in Volunteerism Award!
