The Orange County Sheriff's Department Explorer Post 449 was chartered in November 1959 as the first law enforcement Explorer Post in the Nation. On September 18, 2009, Explorer Post 449 was recognized with the William H. Spurgeon III Award for its significant contributions over the past 50 years to the sustainment and growth of Specialty Exploring.
