Functions of Agency/Department:

Human Resource Services (HRS) is an essential part of the County of Orange’s infrastructure, supporting every aspect of human resource operations. HRS hires and develops employees, ensures fair and equitable treatment of employees, and supports the provision of adequate compensation, which are critical to the County’s success. The mission of HRS is to attract, retain and develop a highly skilled and competent work force so that County agencies/departments can provide outstanding services to its customers.

HRS Recruitment Services has recently transitioned from a decentralized to a centralized recruitment function in order to increase efficiency, standardization and effectiveness. The role of HRS Recruitment Services is to market, rate/test and hire employees in compliance with government standards and merit system principles.

Intern Duties/Responsibilities:

Interns will primarily be involved in graphic design projects to develop social media webpages (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Linked-In) that will attract and recruit applicants for County of Orange employment. Interns will help develop a favorable County employment image or branding, using available technology. Interns will help establish the County of Orange as an employer of choice. Interns will also develop graphics and advertising tools for job fairs and similar outreach events representing the County and furthering the branding effort.

Educational Requirements:

The internship is best suited for students or recent graduates who have completed coursework or gained professional/personal experience in social media technology, graphic design, content management or related fields. Experience with SharePoint, MS Publisher, and Adobe Design Standard CS 6 are required.

Skills, Training or Qualifications:

HRS Recruitment Services is seeking applicants with the following qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of social media resources
  • Strong technology expertise including experience in content management and developing multiple social media sites such as Facebook, Linked-In and Twitter. 
  • Skilled in working with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment and to function independently.
  • Knowledge of SharePoint web page coding is highly desirable.
  • Ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy and work as a change agent.
  • Interest in the public service sector is desired. 

Time Commitment:

Minimum 8 or more hours per week for a minimum duration of 3 or more months. Alternate hours available during summer. Hours must be scheduled during regular business hours (Monday - Friday between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.). Interns able to schedule the maximum hours/duration listed for the internship typically gain a more in-depth experience.

Required Bacground Screening/Reference Check:

Prior to placement, applicants may be asked to submit contact information for reference checks, and a LiveScan criminal record check through the California Department of Justice will be conducted. A Social Security number and valid state-issued driver’s license are required for the LiveScan.

A valid, state-issued driver’s license and proof of auto insurance coverage for personal injuries and property damage are required for all interns who operate a personal vehicle as part of their assignment.
