The County of Orange is a collection of dedicated, public-spirited individuals, who together comprise a regional service provider and planning agency committed to maximizing resources and improving the quality of life in Orange County. Our core businesses are public safety, public health, environmental protection, regional planning, public assistance, social services and aviation.
The County Executive Office (CEO) is the corporate administrative branch of Orange County government. The CEO is responsible for providing leadership, vision and knowledge of emerging trends and issues impacting Orange County. The CEO, in turn, supports and implements Board of Supervisors’ policy and ensures that the County of Orange operates in an efficient, accountable and responsive manner. The County Executive Officer provides direction to all County agency/department heads directly assigned to him and also provides administrative oversight to those department heads who report directly to the Board of Supervisors. In addition, CEO staff also has oversight of a $4.97 billion budget.
Assist staff in the day-to day activities within a busy governmental department. The student or recent graduate selected for the position would be asked to perform a range of duties from very basic activities to those requiring higher skill levels and professional expertise. Duties may include: assisting in the distribution of press releases; responding to questions from the public and community organizations; writing articles for the department newsletter; event planning; drafting updates to the County’s homepage and social media accounts; coordinating special projects and community outreach; creating and updating resource material; and interacting with other governmental- and community-based organizations.
This internship is best suited for junior-, senior- or graduate-level college students with majors in the following areas: Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, or related fields.
Skills, Training or Qualifications:
Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to research information and prepare reports and other correspondence; experience with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and Excel; reliable, outgoing and able to work independently. Previous office experience preferred. Professional appearance and business attire required.
Minimum 12 - 16 hours per week for 3 - 6 months. Hours can be scheduled in 3- to 8-hour blocks of time during regular business hours (Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.). Applicants able to schedule the maximum hours/duration listed for this internship typically gain a more in-depth experience.
