Research/Statistical Analysis Assistant - Orange County Child Support Services (unpaid internship)

Functions of Agency/Department:
Orange County Child Support Services (CSS) is an agency dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for children and families by establishing and enforcing court orders for the financial and medical support of children in an effective, efficient and professional manner.
Research Project Overview:
Current projects involve identifying significant barriers to the payment of child support and setting appropriate order amounts based on tax rate. Intern may participate in survey design, administering surveys to CSS customers, data base organization/design, and data entry/cleaning. Intern may participate in data analysis (regression, cluster analysis and more), secondary analysis of significant results, and development of policies/procedures based on findings.
Intern Duties/Responsibilities:
Duties include assisting research staff with one or more of the following assignments or projects:
- Data entry and report development
- Collect and analyze data
- Interpret findings
- Create and draft reports
Educational Requirements:
This position is best suited for undergraduate- or graduate-level students or recent graduates with an interest in developing skills for conducting research and with educational backgrounds in sociology, psychology, business, social ecology or related fields. Students best suited to the internship will have completed a class in fundamental research methodology and fundamental statistics. Students with comparable skills/experience will be considered without class experience.

- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Highly organized and dependable
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
- Eager to gain professional experience
- Able to complete assignments in a timely manner
- Reliable and able to work independently
- Bilingual Spanish-speaking skills are desirable
Time Commitment:
Minimum 10 - 20 hours per week for 3 - 6 months. Hours must be scheduled during regular business hours (Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.). Applicants able to schedule the maximum hours/duration listed for this internship typically gain a more in-depth experience.
Required Background Screening:
Prior to placement, applicants must undergo a background check that includes live scan fingerprinting. A Social Security number and a valid driver's license or state-issued photo identification are required to process the background screening. Background investigations may take one - two weeks to process.
