Learning for Life
The "Learning for Life" division of the Boy Scouts of America developed its Explorer division for career-oriented young adults between the ages of 14 - 20. Members are referred to as "Explorers" and the program is distinctively different from scouting. Exploring is a co-educational, young-adult program developed and supervised by local community organizations, businesses, and individuals. Exploring offers young adults an opportunity to gain knowledge and skills while considering career options.
Explorer Post 538
Explorer Post 538 is sponsored by OC Animal Care. This successful program is designed to educate and involve young men and women in animal care operations and to interest them in humane law enforcement functions. Many Explorers, but not all, are interested in entering the animal care or law enforcement fields as a career.
Explorer Duties & Responsibilities
Explorers assist the OC Animal Care in community and civic events such as low-cost vaccinations clinics, mobile adoptions, and other special events. They learn the vital functions of the field division as well as the kennel and veterinary operations. Through the "Ride-A-Long" program, Explorers gain a better understanding of the duties and responsibilities of animal control officers as well as the challenges they encounter. In addition to gaining a working knowledge of animal care services, Explorers make a significant difference in the community through their volunteer efforts. Explorers serve as volunteers and do not assume the functions of sworn or civilian animal control officers or employees.
Young adults between the ages of 14 - 20 may apply. Fourteen-year-olds must have completed eighth grade prior to submitting an application.
Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and must be in good standing with school administrators. Once accepted into the program, Explorers must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 and must remain in good standing with school administrators.
Applicants with criminal convictions will not be considered. Once accepted into the program, Explorers must not incur any criminal convictions.
